The exhibition presents Op Art as an art movement that uses visual strategies such as manipulative perception and optical illusions to trigger an active dialogue between the work and the beholder. The artists do not restrict themselves to the sense of sight but aim for an emotional experience affecting the whole body.
Some 120 pictures, objects and walk-in installations from the late 1950s to 1970 will be on view (including works by Bridget Riley, Nicolas Schoeffer and Victor Vasarely). Part of the concept incorporates references to the art of the 15th and 18th centuries (with works by Giovanni Battista Piranesi and Claude Mellan, among others) in which optical effects also play a role.
